The Gazette is reporting an increase of 18% in Blackpool’s unemployment in the past quarter – an indication that things are going to get worse before they get better. Economists have been pointing out that job losses take time to filter through usually, and that we see them later on in a recession. They’re hitting us early this time – and maybe in a more sustained way. On the same day, we hear of the first shop shutting its doors in the Houndshill Centre. And the Woolworths’ branches look to be in the final few days of their existence. No news is good news at the moment.
Gordon Brown said he had abolished boom and bust, claimed he had saved the world, but when faced with job losses on this level, he is nowhere to be seen.
