A quick “Well done” simply doesn’t do justice to Jimmy Armfield’s contribution to the sporting and community life of this part of the world, but his CBE is very, very well deserved. It is easy to get cynical about an honours system but it is equally the only realistic way of recognising those whose service to the communities deserves recognition from the nation as a whole. It was good to see politicians were left off the lists this year – let us hope that it becomes a habit! More unsung heroes, please!
