September 16 in blog by Paul Maynard MP

This weekend has been Beachwatch, the Marine Conservation Society’s annual survey on the state of cleanliness of Britain’s beaches. Never mind Blue Flags, this project relies on volunteers, and spots everything down to the last piece of Tunisian plastic.

In practice, their task could be made that much easier if only the Government would fulfil its promises. A Marine Act is urgently needed to introduce new laws to better protect our marine wildlife and habitats and ensure the sustainable management of our seas and resources. While the Government is committed in theory and have produced a White Paper, in practice they are refusing to prioritise this for parliamentary time and as such many are are worried that it may never see the light of day.

Blackpool relies on its beaches and seashore as a unique selling point. If Labour turn their back on the Marine Bill, then they yet again turn their back on another opportunity to help Blackpool’s regeneration.
