To mark National Allotments Week, I was joined by Layton Councillor, Roy Haskett, at the Layton Allotments, where we were shown round by allotment tenant, Gilbert Brightman, to inspect this year’s bumper crop of produce.
Allotments are more popular than ever. Increasing concern about food miles, and a growing realisation of the importance of your ‘five-a-day’ consumption of fruit ‘n veg, means ever more young people are acquiring allotments.
In my view, there is a crying need for allotment space in north Blackpool, as Layton is the northernmost of the eight available. I am glad to hear that the Council has identified suitable land at the northern end for allotment conversion. I hope they can proceed with this as soon as possible so more residents can get to show off their green fingers.
I am wholeheartedly supporting the improvements to the Layton Allotments and the drainage works. They should release another 9 plots, and so ease the waiting list.
