There was an incendiary report from a House of Commons Committee this week. They really had a go at the Government, saying that the ‘Government has no specific policy or initiatives for coastal towns’ and that there was no real commitment to the tourist industry from the Government – and anyone who knows anything about Blackpool knows how true that is! Labour has turned its back on Blackpool – I may say it a lot, but it doesn’t make it any the less true.
What was also really interesting was the small-print at the back of the report on the evidence gathered from Blackpool Council’s Chief Executive Steve Weaver back in June last year.
In it, he describes the casino bid as a ‘blinkered’ approach to the town’s regeneration. If Mr Weaver realised the lack of a Plan B back in June, why did Roy Fisher and the Labour Council make no effort to start developing alternatives? If this was the advice of the Chief Executive last summer, it makes the Labour’s failure to set Blackpool on the road to recovery all the more astounding.
