Commenting on David Cameron’s launch of the Conservative Party’s education strategy, Cleveleys Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Paul Maynard said:
“These innovative proposals offer the prospect of improving schools yet further in the area. There is a trend in this country in education that those from disadvantaged backgrounds fall further and further behind – we want to stop that.
“When fewer than half of pupils are getting five good grades at GCSE (including maths and English) nationally, then something must clearly be done. It is time we tried something new. I am pleased to see that educational charities, not-for-profit trusts and groups of parents will be able to set up new schools in the state sector here in Blackpool under our plans. These schools would be open to all, without any form of selection.
By encouraging smaller schools as well, we also believe that we can improve the learning environment and enhance discipline. Improve discipline and behaviour in schools, shifting the balance of power in the classroom back in favour of the teacher. Where there is funding for pupils in deprived areas, that funding needs to go straight to the pupil – not diverted through endless layers of bureaucracy.
“Taken together, these proposals demonstrate that the next Conservative Government will be an exciting opportunity for improving education in Lancashire and beyond”.
