June 28 in blog by Paul Maynard MP

Thursday was a historic day in Blackpool. Park ward gained its first Conservative councillor in living memory. And we didn’t just scrape a win – we defeated Labour by 977 to 448. UKIP were humiliated with just 30 votes! The result is a towering achievement, and congratulations are due to a fantastic candidate in Peter Collins, who did everything that was asked and more, as well as Simon Renwick, the ever-willing agent who was equally a star. We had help arrive from all over the north west.

The set expressions on the faces of Joan Humble and Gordon Marsden at the count spoke volumes. Not only has Blackpool turned its back on them, even their heartlands like Grange Park have fallen out of love with them. No wonder Gordon chickened out of coming for National Veterans Day the next day!
