Back from my holidays in Italy.

And you know what struck me most? The post offices. In the little town I was staying in, the Post Office was the centre of the universe. In a modern, scrupulously clean and tidy building (as was every Post Office I went in there), you could buy books, CDs, and all sorts of other goods that weren’t available anywhere else in town. The only thing it didn’t seem to do was ice cream.

There were about 8 counters – but only one of them actually dealt with postal items! Poste Italiane has realised that, faced with the same changing commercial circumstances as our own Post Office, they had to broaden out. Now, the Post Office essentially functions as a bank – and a little counter at the end still sells stamps.

It is this sort of commercially-enterprising mindset that has seen Poste Italiane expanding its branch network at a time when our own is contracting. Labour and the Royal Mail should go figure. Decline is not inevitable.
