Tomorrow, Blackpool Council is meeting to agree rent rises for council house tenants, but it is worth remining Blackpool tenants that government minister Ruth Kelly earlier this week signalled an end to the right to a ‘tenancy for life’ for tenants that has hitherto held true.

This brings added uncertainty to the lives of very many people who need security of tenure. At the same time, the Government has been reducing the Right to Buy scheme’s maximum discount, and only 5 houses have been sold under their ‘Social Home Buy’scheme, which has clearly flopped. David Cameron has already said that we will help people up the housing ladder by allowing people to buy a stake in their council homes – we are moving in the opposite direction to Labour’s back-door plans to reduce security of tenure.

Bet the Council don’t make any mention of this though!
