Why does this matter, you may ask? Because if you have already studied for a qualification in this country (like a HND, maybe), and want to take another similar or lower qualification, you will no longer be entitled to have your teaching costs subsidised by the Government. You will, in effect, be treated like a student from an overseas country is now. An estimated twenty per cent of part time students will find they suddenly have to find hundreds more pounds out of their own pockets. These cuts will penalise those who want to change career direction, increase their earning power, or take advantage of institutions like the Open University. So much for a commitment to “lifelong learning”. In Blackpool and elsewhere, Labour seem determined to turn their back on those who show any ambition.

One of the benefits of publishing the record of parliamentary debate in Hansard is that it gives us the opportunity to see how our representatives actually vote when confronted with an issue – rather than just the airy waffle many associate with politicians. Residents in Blackpool North, Cleveleys and Fleetwood will therefore have had the opportunity to note that Joan Humble voted in support of the Government’s policy to slash £100 million from the budget for adult education yesterday.
