£1m a year. That’s how much the Council pays Leisure Parcs to keep the Winter Gardens open. But is it right that the Labour Council should enter a new long-term deal so soon before local elections – the outcome of which will probably see Labour lose control of the Council? Projects such as Storm City may finally deliver a new conference venue (now the casino has gone by the board) and we have to know where we are going and what we are doing in the medium- to long-term. This is the people’s money, after all.
A new conference venue need not mean the end for the Winter Gardens. I am always saying Blackpool needs to make more of its heritage potential, and the Winter Gardens would make a great venue for the Victoria & Albert Museum to move the Theatre Museum to alongside a potential Museum of Entertainment. That would begin to draw in visitors who might not otherwise think of coming to Blackpool – just what we need to guarantee our future as a resort.
