I have just had a real treat and been given a tour of Blackpool’s tramsheds on Rigby Road, looking at the antique trams – some as many as 100 years old.
I was accompanied by our Shadow Transport Secretary Chris Grayling. We heard all about how the trams are teetering on the brink of collapse thanks to Labour’s dithering over signing off on application bids. Too many different pots of money in Whitehall, too little co-ordination in Government over bidding for it, for a network which is fundamental to Blackpool’s tourist appeal as well as to those local people who use it for transport. The tracks are nearing the end of their lifespan – if not way beyond it. The tram carriages need updating to meet new legislation. Labour’s lack of interest is just not good enough – yet another example of Labour turning their back on Blackpool. The trams are vital to the town’s future, and we can’t stand by and watch them disappear.
