Out my front door, over the (dismantled) tram tracks for my morning constitutional down the shoreline, and what happens when I try to get the lower promenade? I can’t, to my surprise. Souped-up Ford Cortinas like extras from Life on Mars are hurtling at very high speeds – and making an awful racket. Apparently it is one of the stages in the North West Stages Rally 2008.

If this sounds like a complaint, do not fear, as I love rallying although I am always responsible on the public roads as we all should be. Nonetheless, one of my dreams is to hurtle around the Nordschleife section of the old Nurburgring – truly the world’s greatest ever motor racing circuit. Sadly, my dreams of competing in the Mille Miglia round Italy with Fangio can never be fulfilled – although they now do commercial runs round the Nordschleife.

It’s good to see something a bit different happening in Blackpool. In particular, it was good to see the car park at Pontins being put to good out-of-season use for the car owners and their repair work. I am sure the owners could think of a few more uses to put the complex to …

I was struck by the absence of environmental campaigners protesting against the ecological impact. I suspect they are spoilt for choice over what to protest against these days. Can I suggest the one Chinese power station opening every few weeks which erodes any reductions this country can make in carbon output very, very quickly!
