A meeting was held at a packed St Andrew’s Church in Cleveleys to discuss Labour’s plans for a new health centre which will seek to drive the town’s other GPs out of business. I attended the meeting, and spoke about my fears for my own Bispham GP surgery.
Labour has destroyed local communities by shutting Post Offices, bingo halls, pubs and clubs. Now it has turned its sights on GP surgeries. Consultation has been non-existent over these changes. But I was heartened by the obvious determination on the part of everyone in the audience to remain loyal to their existing GPs. The fact that hundreds turned out tonight, and more will turn out on Wednesday night, is testament to the strength of feeling locally. They have my full support.
Continuity of care is the foundation of General Practice, and risks being undermined by these dangerous, ill-thought out plans. Why doesn’t the Government invest this money in existing facilities so that services such as for mental health or diabetes can be improved? Better services are what are needed, not new buildings.
